Knights women's basketball clipped by No. 22 Screaming Eagles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team couldn't overcome No. 22 Southern Indiana's push bridging the third and fourth quarters in the Screaming Eagles' 67-59 victory Monday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Knights Hall.

Senior guard Raven Merriweather scored a game-high 22 points for Bellarmine (8-8, 3-4 GLVC) and added five rebounds and two steals against Southern Indiana (13-2, 5-1). Senior forward Beth Bowers contributed 11 points, five rebounds and two steals while freshman guard Breia Torrens chipped in nine points, three assists and two steals.

The score was tight through most of the first three quarters, but USI used a 10-0 run over the final five minutes of the third period to build a 47-37 lead. The Screaming Eagles, crashing the offensive glass and hitting from the outside, extended their advantage to 17 with 5:47 left on a 3-pointer by Kaydie Grooms, who paced the team with 21 points. Morgan Dahlstrom and Alex Davidson added 16 points apiece.

Merriweather had seven points during a 13-4 Bellarmine run to close the game. She sank a trio of 3-pointers. The Knights hit 11 of their 12 free throws.

Southern Indiana held a 41-26 rebounding advantage, including 12-6 on the offensive glass. The Screaming Eagles outscored the Knights 32-20 in the paint.

Merriweather sank a 3-pointer and found Bowers for a layup as Bellarmine started strong in building a 10-3 lead. The Knights held a 15-12 advantage after one quarter, and the teams were never separated by more than a possession in the second period as the Screaming Eagles grabbed a 30-28 halftime lead.

Bellarmine hosts Drury at 5:45 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
