ST. LOUIS — On a cold and rainy Friday, the visiting Bellarmine University women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with Missouri-St. Louis in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Bellarmine (7-4-2, 5-2-2 GLVC) notched its sixth shutout of the season, while Missouri-St. Louis (3-8-1, 2-6-1) became the second team to blank the Knights.
"There are some conflicting feelings about that one," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "On one hand, we created some very good chances toward the end of the game and in overtime, and it would have been nice to get one. On the other hand, on a night when we seemed to want no part of the difficult conditions from the beginning of the warm-up, it was great to survive a 20-minute onslaught in the middle of the second half and at least get a tie."
Shots were at a premium. Both squads finished with eight. Bellarmine had a 4-2 edge in the first half, and UMSL had a 6-3 advantage in the second half. The Knights had the only shot attempt in the first overtime. Neither team had an attempt in the second extra session.
"Big picture we did a lot things well again," Tinius said. "We kept a shutout and had some big spans of possession, especially in the first half. Unfortunately, as has been the case previously, some of our best opportunities came early, but we weren't ready for them. We didn't have the extra aggression in the final third until we felt like we might not win the game. By then it was too late."
Sophomore goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis collected five saves for Bellarmine while Amber Hayes had three for the Tritons.
Bellarmine plays at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Truman State.
"Give the UMSL team credit for a hard-fought game just like we expected," Tinius said, "and give the UMSL athletic staff credit for pulling these games off at an alternate venue."
