Knights women's soccer plays to scoreless deadlock with Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team played to a scoreless stalemate for the second straight match as the visiting Knights tied 0-0 Sunday with Truman State in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Bellarmine (7-4-3, 5-2-3 GLVC) registered its seventh shutout of the season while Truman State (10-3-1, 6-3-1) became the third team to shut out the Knights, who also played to a scoreless draw with Missouri-St. Louis on Friday.

"That was a very good performance today," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "We had a lot of the ball against a very good team. But at the end of the day, we leave with a tie without putting one in the back of the net. It can be tough to swallow, but that's the way it goes in the game of soccer."

Bellarmine finished with a 22-8 advantage in shots, including 11-1 on frame. Beth Hopwood collected all 11 of those saves for the Bulldogs. The Knights attempted eight shots in the first half, 11 in the second and a combined three in the two overtimes.

Truman State attempted just one shot in the extra sessions, but it provided a tense moment as the chance caromed off the crossbar. Sophomore midfielder Samantha Ferry had a shot ding off the crossbar in the first half as well for Bellarmine.

"We had 22 shots and didn't even pull the trigger in some of the better scenarios we created," Tinius said. "In doing that, it can be easy to lose focus in the back, and they have some kids that can make you pay if you fall asleep. We handled that aspect well too."

Bellarmine will play its final three regular-season matches at home, starting with William Jewell on Friday.

"There were a lot of positives to take," Tinius said. "We need to trust that the goals will come again if we keep that up. But that was maybe our best performance of the week, and we come back from the road trip with two shutouts. We'll try to get what we can out of the next 10 days and see where that leaves us."
