Bellarmine falls in overtime at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.—The host Mercy Mavericks scored just 36 seconds into overtime to squeak by the Bellarmine Knights 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field on the banks of the Hudson River.

After battling to a 0-0 tie in regulation, the Mavericks took the opening possession of overtime, and they took full advantage of their first chance.  Mercy's Alicia Williams ran down a loose ball just before it crossed the end line and fired a pass in front of the goal where teammate Angela Robbins was able to corral and redirect the ball into the goal for the victory.

Final statistics showed a very even game with both teams getting 12 shots in regulation and each team drawing 13 penalty corners.  In the end, it was the one extra shot that Mercy got in overtime that was the difference.

Each team also had golden opportunities to score on penalty strokes in the second half, but the goalkeepers won both head-to-head battles.  First it was Mercy's Cheradyn Pettit stretching to her right to bat down a shot off the stick of Merit Harris.  Then, with less than a minute to play in regulation, Bellarmine's Heather Gregory laid out to turn away a penalty stroke by Kayly Bryan.

Gregory notched seven saves in the game with Sara Wilder and Storm Thompson each contributing a defensive save for the Knights.  Pettit and starting goalie Julia Amell combined for eight saves for Mercy, which also had a defensive save credited to Kellie Znaniecki.

The victory for Mercy (3-9) avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to Bellarmine back on September 21 in a game that was plagued with several weather delays. The Knights (5-7) drop their sixth consecutive game, including five straight on the road.

"It's hard to win if cannot score," said Bellarmine Coach Mark Blankenbaker. "Today is the fourth time this season we've been shut out. Two other games we've only scored one goal. Then, on the other end, we've lost several games because we didn't step up to the ball in the circle. We played better today; I was happy with our effort," Blankenbaker said, but added he felt there were too many wasted opportunities and unforced mistakes.

Bellarmine returns home for a game on Saturday when they host Belmont Abbey at noon in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
