LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The disappointment of seeing two goals wiped off the board finally gave way to the elation of a score that stood. And once the scoring started, it didn't stop.
On Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 23 minutes in posting a 3-0 victory over William Jewell in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Sophomore forward
Natalie Teo scored the first goal for Bellarmine (8-4-3, 6-2-3 GLVC) while senior midfielder
Audrey Van Der Elst tallied the last two against the Cardinals (7-8-1, 4-7). Van Der Elst also assisted on Teo's game-winner, and senior forward
Jordan Chlebowy and senior midfielder
Madison Stephens added helpers as well.
"It was fantastic to see the ball go into the net a few times — and some good goals at that," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said.
Midway through the second half, Bellarmine — and junior forward
Olivia Taylor in particular — could have been forgiven for being frustrated. Taylor had a goal taken off the board due to offsides in the first half, and then she had an assist to Teo wiped out in the second half on another offsides call that Tinius vehemently argued.
Finally, in the 68th minute, the tension was eased. From near the right sideline, Van Der Elst curled a free kick toward the top of the goal area. Teo rose high and popped a header into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. It was her second goal of the season, both game-winners.
That goal opened the floodgates. In the 74th minute, Chlebowy passed straight across the top of the box from the right side to the left for Van Der Elst, who ripped a shot into the upper net for a 2-0 advantage.
Van Der Elst struck again in the 86th minute. She inched toward the goal area as Stephens made a nice run down the left side and punched in Stephens' cross for a 3-0 lead. Van Der Elst boosted her team-high total to five goals.
"At halftime we talked about looking like we wanted to actually score versus just creating a shot or getting the ball on frame. A little different demeanor in that part of the field paid off," Tinius said. "The second goal was especially good to see because I believe it involved all three forwards in the same sequence."
Sophomore goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis and the defense notched their third straight shutout and eighth overall. The Knights finished with a 12-11 advantage in shots, including 7-2 on goal, as rain fell throughout the second half.
"The conditions really changed during halftime, and we didn't handle the wet surface very well the first 15 minutes or so, but we did a good job of weathering their storm," Tinius said. "They have some good attacking players and can be a streaky team in the attack. We knew there would be spots when they had momentum. To keep another clean sheet through that period and come out the other side with some goals was great."
Bellarmine hosts Drury at noon (ET) Sunday. The Knights will celebrate Senior Day.
