Balanced attack for Knights leads to sweep of Screaming Eagles

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—In a rare Tuesday evening Great Lakes Valley Conference match, the Bellarmine Knights protected their home court with a sweep of Southern Indiana in Knights Hall.

Using a balanced attack and closing out all three sets with authority, the Knights improved to 10-8 overall and climbed to 4-6 in GLVC play.

Bellarmine asserted its dominance about midway through the first set, extending a 9-9 tie into a five-point lead at 16-11.  The hosts then closed out the game by winning the last four points to win 25-18.

The Screaming Eagles had an early 4-0 advantage in the second set, but the Knights battled back and took their first lead at 10-9.  The margin never got more than two for either team as the squads battled back and forth over the next 16 points. However, Bellarmine again finished strongly, winning eight of the final 11 points to take the second set 25-21.

The Knights closed out the match with a near wire-to-wire win in the third set. After the teams traded the first two points of the final frame, the Knights took the lead and slowly extended their cushion with Jordyn Kuchenbrod closing out the match with a service ace on match point to give Bellarmine a 25-16 win.

Freshman Bailey Roszman led all hitters with nine kills as six Knights registered six or more. Katie Adams, Jacquie Hornung and Abbie Oetting had eight apiece with Julia Dailey adding seven and Izzie Salameh chipping in six.

Bellarmine outhit the Screaming Eagles .258 to .069 as the home team racked up 19 more kills (46-27).  Led by Kuchenbrod's 25 digs, the Knights also outdug their opponents, winning that battle 59-52.

Southern Indiana (8-10, 2-7 GLVC) owned a 7-2 block advantage with Sidney Hegg helping out on four those stops. The visitors also had a better serving night, recording three aces and committing just two errors while BU had nine service errors and two aces.

The Knights stay at home for their next two matches, entertaining Indianapolis on Friday at 7 p.m. with the No. 15 Lewis Flyers visiting on Saturday at 3 p.m.
