Knights roll over Greyhounds in straight sets

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Facing a critical part of its season, the Bellarmine volleyball team came up with one of its best performances of the year to sweep the University of Indianapolis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match on Friday night at Knights Hall.

Bellarmine was dominant from start to finish as the Knights outhit the Greyhounds .292 to .040.  Not only were the Knights effective offensively, the Bellarmine defense had one its best outings of the year, too, tying a season-high with nine team blocks and "outdigging" the Hounds 45-32.

The Knights opened the match with a statement-making 25-14 victory in set one as BU outhit UIndy .357 to a negative .030.  The home team also came up with five team blocks in the opening frame.

With that emphatic opening, the Knights simply continued to outperform their GLVC rivals on both sides of the net in the second stanza to take a 25-17 victory. The Knights hit .385 compared to just .133 for the Hounds, and BU also "outdug" the visitiors 13-6 to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Bellarmine closed the match with a strong finish in set three to earn the victory.  After the teams battled  to a 17-17 tie in the third set, the Knights won eight of the final 10 points to finish off the Greyhounds 25-19 to earn the sweep.

Bellarmine senior Katie Adams led all hitters with 12 kills while hitting at a .391 clip, and Jacquie Hornung and Bailey Roszman added eight kills for the Knights.  The Greyhounds were paced by Emily Ellis's eight kills on just 13 swings.

Liberos Jordyn Kuchenbrod of Bellarmine and Olivia Martin of UIndy led their respective teams in digs with 18 and 12 respectively while Abbie Oetting was credited with five block assists to lead the match in blocks.

Bellarmine improves to 11-8 overall and 5-6 in league play while the Greyhounds fall to 11-7, 6-3 GLVC.

The Knights return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. contest against No. 15 Lewis, which improved to 14-4, 7-2 with a 4-set victory over Southern Indiana on Friday.
