Knights men's soccer continues surge with 4-2 victory over Drury

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The tail end of the first half saw the Bellarmine University men's soccer team score at a rapid-fire rate.

On Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Knights put away three goals inside the final 13 minutes before halftime en route to a 4-2 victory over Drury in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Junior forward Tomas Bernedo, freshman forward Laslo Wanger and freshman midfielder Nate Girao accounted for a goal apiece for Bellarmine (9-5-1, 8-3-1 GLVC), which won its fifth straight match. Sophomore defender Jonas Skulstad added an assist for the Knights against the Panthers (2-11-3, 2-8-2).

Bellarmine scored four times before Drury answered. The first goal came in the 33rd minute as Bernedo charged up the middle of the field and ripped a shot from 25 yards into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. It was Bernedo's fifth goal of the season.

While Bernedo's shot was blasted, the Knights required much lighter touches on their next two goals. In the 41st minute, Skulstad spotted Wanger in the middle of the box, and he managed to poke his shot past Drury's oncoming goalkeeper and into the net for a 2-0 advantage on his second goal of the season.

Less than four minutes later, Girao raced for a loose ball at the top of the box and managed to flick a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 lead. It was Girao's third goal of the season and turned out to be the game-winner.

After taking that 3-0 advantage into the intermission, Bellarmine got some help from Drury almost immediately in the second half. Less than a minute in, a Panthers defender inadvertently redirected a Knights cross into the net for an own goal.

The 4-0 advantage proved to be insurmountable, but Drury didn't go away quietly. The Panthers got a pair of second-half goals from Alex Esquivel, the latter of which came in the 72nd minute and kept the Knights on edge down the stretch.

Bellarmine finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots, including 11-4 on frame. Senior goalkeeper Zach Pogue and senior defender Ismael Candelario were honored on Senior Day, and Pogue earned the victory while collecting a pair of saves.

Bellarmine and Indianapolis are tied for third in the GLVC. The Knights host the Greyhounds in the teams' regular-season finale at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Wednesday.
