Hunt, Bernedo provide Bellarmine goals in each half as Knights down Hawks 2-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team saw its 13-game winning streak at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium snapped on Friday, but the Knights took the first step toward another string on Sunday.

Junior forward Tomas Bernedo scored with less than eight minutes remaining as the Knights defeated Rockhurst 2-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Junior defender Chris Hunt collected the first goal for Bellarmine (5-5-1, 4-3-1 GLVC), which has won three of its last four matches. Junior midfielder Mitch Lammert chipped in an assist against Rockhurst (4-5-2, 3-3-2).

Despite a decisive advantage in shots, Bellarmine found itself tied with Rockhurst with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Lammert rifled a shot from near the top of the box that sent Hawks goalkeeper Peter Baker sprawling to bat it down. Bernedo was there for the follow on the save, lacing a shot from 10 yards inside the near post for his fourth goal of the year, and the game-winner, in the 83rd minute.

Hunt gave Bellarmine a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on his first goal of the season. The defender made a long run up the middle from past midfield and remained free as he approached the box. Hunt fired from 22 yards out, sinking a shot inside the right post to give the Knights the early advantage.

It didn't take Rockhurst long to answer, as Jordan Andrews knotted the match at 1-all in the 18th minute. Neither team would locate the net again until Bernedo's goal late in the second half.

Bellarmine had a commanding advantage in shots, racking up 23 to the nine of Rockhurst. The Knights had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and 12-4 superiority in corner kicks.

Bellarmine plays Friday at Missouri-St. Louis and Sunday at Truman State.
