LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Now this is how you put on a show for your alumnae.
On Saturday in Knights Hall, five players scored in double figures as the Bellarmine University women's basketball team piled up its highest point total in the
Chancellor Dugan era in racing to a 102-73 victory over Central State on Alumnae Day.
"It's a great team win, and I'm glad we had the alumnae out here today. We had a great crowd, and they were into it," Dugan said.
Sophomore forward
Lauren Deel posted a career high for the third straight game for Bellarmine (3-0), matching her top effort in a Knights uniform with 18 points along with registering seven rebounds and four assists. In the nonconference contest, senior center
Liza Tibbs supplied 12 points and eight rebounds against the Marauders (2-2) while junior forward
Mallory Schwartz chipped in 11 points, five rebounds and four steals, and junior forward
Allison Van Dyke and sophomore guard
Breia Torrens contributed 10 points apiece.
The 102 points is the highest for Bellarmine in Dugan's seven seasons. The Knights reached 96 points on three separate occasions during that span, the most recent in last season's November romp over visiting Alderson Broaddus. The output was the most for the program since a 115-113 overtime loss to visiting Kentucky Wesleyan in the 2011-12 campaign.
Bellarmine blew the game open in the second half when the Knights outscored Central State 56-30 over the two stanzas. They continued a theme in outscoring the Marauders 56-36 in the paint. Bellarmine shot a solid 48.2 percent overall, drilled eight 3-pointers, canned 14-of-18 free throws and hauled in 24 offensive rebounds. Both teams scored 30 off turnovers — Central State had 28 and Bellarmine 25 in a game played at breakneck speed.
"I wasn't pleased with our turnovers. They were a quick team, and we've got to do a better job of taking care of the ball," Dugan said. "Overall, though, I was pleased with how we played."
Bellarmine gained a 22-13 lead after the first quarter, but ever-attacking Central State trimmed its deficit to 46-43 at halftime. Schwartz began the third quarter with an and-1 and drained a 3-pointer to complete a 10-0 run to start the period. Bellarmine's lead never dipped below nine thereafter, and Torrens sank a jump to help the Knights to a 71-56 lead heading into the final period.
Once there, Bellarmine never let up in pouring in 31 points in the frame. The lead rose to 21 on a 3-pointer by freshman guard
Kathleen Scott and grew to 30 on a layup by Deel. Junior guard
Katie Downey stroked a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter and Schwartz added another before freshman center
Jalaya Dowell stuck a lay-in for points 99 and 100. Senior forward
Stephanie Still dropped in the final bucket to reach 102.
"I thought we did a good job of correcting our mistakes after what we talked about at halftime," Dugan said. "That's a mark at what I look at as far as a team being coachable. I was very pleased with the adjustments we made at halftime and into the third quarter."
Dowell tallied six points and six rebounds in seven minutes. Scott and junior guard
Mikayla Berry had four assists each, and Berry added three steals. Takrya Gilbert led Central State with 20 points.
"It didn't matter who was in or who was out — they were all cheering for each other," Dugan said in reference to the team's depth. "It's fun to coach a team like that."
Bellarmine plays next Saturday and Sunday in the USI Thanksgiving Classic in Evansville, Indiana. The Knights lead off with Michigan Tech before facing Lake Erie. Both contests are at 1 p.m. (ET).
"Those are two huge region games for us," Dugan said. "Michigan Tech is very, very good and Lake Erie can really cause a lot of problems."
