Fischer sinks PK as Knights edge McKendree 1-0 to advance to GLVC Tournament finals

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Greg Fischer was on the money, and the Bellarmine University men's soccer team cashed a trip to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament finals.

On Friday at the Woehrle Athletic Complex, the sophomore defender buried a penalty kick in the second half as the second-seeded Knights edged sixth-seeded McKendree 1-0 in the tournament semifinals while tying the program record for wins.

Bellarmine (12-5-1) will be making its first appearance in the GLVC Tournament finals since 1992. The Knights are doing so after piling up their eighth straight win to reach 12 for the third time ever. Bellarmine also amassed a dozen victories in 1985 and 2007.

Bellarmine will meet four-seed Maryville at noon (ET) Sunday. The Saints captured a 1-0 victory over eight-seed Rockhurst.

Bellarmine's string of consecutive matches with multiple goals was stopped at seven, but the only thing that mattered to the Knights was that their win streak remained intact against McKendree (11-6-1). The opening came in the 57th minute when sophomore midfielder and leading goal scorer Micah Linscott was taken down from behind inside the box.

Bellarmine was rewarded with a penalty kick. Fischer drilled it for his first goal of the season as the Knights were assertive in the second half in holding an 11-3 shot advantage in the frame.

Overall, Bellarmine held a 19-7 shot superiority, although both teams registered four shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Connor Range and the defense posted their eighth shutout.
