Maryville tops Knights men's soccer in penalty kicks in GLVC title game

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Maryville defeated the Bellarmine University men's soccer team 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout as the Saints captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship Sunday at the Woehrle Athletic Complex.

The match was officially a 2-2 draw after the teams failed to score in the two overtime periods. In the penalty kick shootout, fourth-seeded Maryville (10-4-5) made its first attempt and then hit its third, fourth and fifth chances, the latter of which clinched the GLVC title. Second-seeded Bellarmine (12-5-2) had missed its first two kicks before sophomore defenders Tyler Niemann and Jonas Skulstad both converted.

Skulstad tied the match at 1-all in the first half with a goal for Bellarmine, while sophomore midfielder Micah Linscott gave the Knights a 2-1 lead in the second half on his 12th goal of the season. Junior forward Tomas Bernedo chipped in an assist for Bellarmine, which was making its first appearance in the GLVC Tournament finals since 1992.

Maryville struck first as Ricardo Andrade chipped in a goal in the 38th minute. It didn't long for Bellarmine to answer as Skulstad punched in a header for his second goal of the season in the 43rd minute to knot the match at 1.

Bellarmine wrangled the lead after halftime in the 57th minute as Linscott received a pass from Bernedo in the box and laced a shot inside the far post. It was Bernedo's ninth assist of the season.

This time Maryville answered immediately, as Jd Sohn attempted a shot from a challenging angle on the left side and sank the kick into an open net to tie the match at 2 only 16 seconds after the Knights had scored.

Neither team found the net again in the second half and the two overtimes. Bellarmine finished with a 21-9 advantage in shots, including 11-4 on goal. The Knights had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
