NEWBERRY, S.C.—The Bellarmine field hockey team may have won the statistical battle, but the host Newberry Wolves won the war, posting a 3-0 victory in the Knights' season finale on Sunday afternoon at Setzler Field.
Bellarmine outshot Newberry 12-8 and owned a significant 11-2 edge in penalty corners, but Knights could not find the cage. Meanwhile the Wolves, fired six shots on frame and three found the mark.
Newberry got off to a fast start as Chanel Gauthier converted a pass from Farai Kawonde just 2:39 into the contest. Despite the quick goal, the offense was quiet the rest of the first half as the Knights had two shots knocked away by Newberry goalie Allison Davis, and BU's
Heather Gregory stopped three more on target shots by the Wolves.
In the second period, Bellarmine fired off seven shots, but only got two on target and both were batted away by Davis. Conversely, Newberry took only three total shots and both shots on frame eluded Bellarmine goalie Breanna McWorter.
Newberry's Kawonde finished the game with two goals and an assist to lead all scorers.
Bellarmine's leader was
Merit Harris with three shots while
Cassidy Sweeney,
April Paulson and
Makenzie Cooper all were credited with two.
The Knights end their season at 8-9 overall while Newberry improves to 7-9.
