Knights women's basketball pulls away from Hawks in fourth to post 68-53 win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Senior guard Raven Merriweather and sophomore guard Mikayla Berry combined for 42 points, and the Bellarmine University women's basketball team delivered a strong fourth quarter to run away from Rockhurst in a 68-53 victory Thursday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Merriweather registered her second straight double-double with game highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds for visiting Bellarmine (15-10, 10-6 GLVC), which has won four of five. Berry notched 17 points and four assists while sophomore forward Allison Van Dyke chipped in nine points and six rebounds.

Bellarmine only led 39-35 after three quarters, but the Knights piled up 29 points in the fourth period and held the Hawks (10-13, 6-9) to 18. Bellarmine shot 60 percent (9 of 15) in the final stanza but shot just 36.7 percent for the game, indicating its shooting struggles over the first three quarters.

"We got every shot we wanted, we just weren't making them," Bellarmine Coach Chancellor Dugan said. "We had to fight for everything we got."

That tenacity paid off in the fourth quarter. With Bellarmine clinging to a 39-38 lead, freshman forward Lauren Deel converted a feed from Van Dyke and later had a steal and layup to cap a 10-2 run. The Knights forced Rockhurst into 20 turnovers and amassed 12 steals, with Merriweather collecting four and Deel adding three.

After Bellarmine's burst, Rockhurst got within five on a few occasions, but Merriweather and Berry combined to hit 9-of-10 free throws in the frame as the Knights pulled away from the Hawks.

"They're really good," Dugan said of Merriweather and Berry, "and they're really good when they play together."

Merriweather was 10 for 11 at the charity stripe. Bellarmine hit 21 of 24 (87.5 percent) for the game. Jillian Myers led Rockhurst with 18 points.

Bellarmine plays at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Truman State.
