MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The visiting Bellarmine University baseball team was edged 4-3 in 11 innings by Montevallo on Saturday in the second game of a three-game series.
In the bottom of the 11th inning, Montevallo had runners on first and third with two outs against senior right-hander
Yancey Pritchett (0-1) when senior right-hander
Duncan Amrein entered. After second base was stolen, Chad Wagner walked to load the bases. Jason Cryar then forced in the winning run when he followed with a walk.
Freshman corner infielder
Jacob Mulcahy launched his first collegiate homer for Bellarmine (0-2), and both he and senior second baseman
Alex Ralph tallied two hits. Senior catcher
Brady Pfaadt, junior right fielder
Zac Wiley, junior center fielder
Alex Phillips and freshman pinch hitter
Matt Higgins chipped in one hit each against Montevallo (7-3).
In his Bellarmine debut, sophomore right-hander
Anthony Ethington impressed for the Knights with 4.2 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out six against no walks and allowed four hits. Senior left-hander
Hunter Spencer started and got a no-decision.
Bellarmine scored twice in the third as Wiley and senior left fielder
Griffin Neuer collected RBIs after Ralph's double. Mulcahy led off the sixth with a solo homer, marking Bellarmine's final run of the contest.
Montevallo scored once in the second, third and fifth before the winning run came across in the 11th. Chrit Rudkin (2-1) earned the win with 5.0 scoreless innings of relief in which he struck out seven while yielding four hits.
Montevallo's pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts while Bellarmine's staff teamed for 12.
Bellarmine plays the series finale at Montevallo at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
