CHESTER, Pa.—Bellarmine University came up empty on 12 fourth quarter shots as the Manhattan Jaspers netted three goals in the last period to rally from a 9-7 deficit to defeat the Knights 10-9 in a non-conference game played at Quick Stadium on the campus of Widener University on Saturday night.
The Knights owned a 49-32 advantage in shots, but the Jaspers won the battle of the scoreboard. Another positive for Bellarmine was the performance of freshman
Michael Autry, who had a good day at the "X," winning 15 of 23 face-offs.
After a scoreless opening nine and a half minutes, the Jaspers struck for two goals in a span of just 2:34 to grab a 2-0 lead late in the first quarter. Bellarmine battled back, scoring off the face-off as
Brian Wall converted a pass from Autry. The teams then traded goals with
Morgan Macko tallying a score with just seconds remaining in the first quarter to trim the lead to 3-2.
Manhattan increased to lead to two early in the second period, but the Knights reeled off three in a row to grab a 6-5 lead. The Jaspers answered with just 17 seconds remaining in the period to make it a tie game at half.
After the break, Manhattan surged back ahead with a goal at the 9:17 mark of the third quarter. However, the Knights again scored three in a row to take a 9-7 lead heading into the final period.
All the scoring came from the Jaspers in the final stanza. Manhattan tied the game at nine apiece with 9:41 remaining. Over the next 6:40, the Knights peppered the Jasper defense with nine shots but came up empty. The Jaspers got off just two shots during that same time span, but scored on their next attempt, netting the eventual game winner at the 2:47 mark.
A violation gave Manhattan possession on the ensuing face-off, and the Knights were unable to get another offensive possession.
Individually, Sean McKinney of Manhattan was the goal leader, tallying four on the day. The Knights got a hat trick from senior
Brian Wall with
Morgan Macko and
Will Roshkowski contributing two goals apiece for BU.
Luke Legnard and
Ian Miller registeried one goal each to round out the Bellarmine scoring.
Bellarmine slips to 1-3 on the season while the Jaspers win their third in a row to improve to 3-2.
The Knights return to action in the Midwest Classic on in Detroit on March 2 and 4. Bellarmine takes on Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. on Friday and faces Marquette on Sunday at 11 a.m.
