LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Junior third baseman
Josh Finerty made a diving stab to his left, hopped to his feet and fired to first base for the final out.
The sensational play put the last touch on a strong sweep Sunday for the Bellarmine University baseball team as the Knights defeated visiting Alderson Broaddus by scores of 12-0 and 9-3.
Hunter Spencer (2-0) earned the win in the opener after tossing 6.0 scoreless innings for Bellarmine (9-5). The senior left-hander allowed three hits and no walks while striking out three. Senior right-hander
Duncan Amrein sewed up the shutout against Alderson Broaddus (2-9) with 1.0 scoreless inning of relief.
Bellarmine's offense was highly efficient in the first game, racking up the 12 runs on 10 hits. The Knights didn't give Alderson Broaddus any help, piling up 13 walks and striking out only twice. Bellarmine owned a 4-0 lead after four and put the game away with a six-run sixth.
Senior shortstop
Drew Greenwood had two hits while eight other Knights collected one. Finerty tallied three RBIs and junior designated hitter
Zac Wiley and senior left fielder
Griffin Neuer drove in a pair.
In the finale, Alderson Broaddus rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie it up as Chuck Hooker launched a three-run homer in the third, but Bellarmine responded with five runs in the bottom half to again pull away. Freshman catcher
Alex Cleverly walked with the bases loaded to push in the go-ahead run, sophomore center fielder
Bobby Brokamp followed with an RBI single, Greenwood added a sacrifice fly and Wiley laced a two-run single.
Wiley was 2 for 2 with three RBIs in the second game. Brokamp was also 2 for 2 and Greenwood chipped in two hits. Sophomore right fielder
John Millay drew the team's biggest cheers when he nearly blasted a homer down the left-field line in his only at-bat before settling for an RBI triple.
Neuer tripled in the opener. In addition to the two triples, the Knights amassed seven doubles over the two games.
Freshman right-hander
Brandon Pfaadt (2-0) notched the win in the finale behind 3.0 scoreless innings of relief in which he registered four strikeouts. Senior right-hander
Yancey Pritchett pitched a scoreless final inning.
