Knights baseball sweeps seventh-ranked Indianapolis behind Mathis, Nagel

WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Bellarmine University baseball team took full advantage of the opportunity to make a statement against a top 10 opponent.

On Friday at Grand Park, the Knights swept seventh-ranked Indianapolis by scores of 5-2 and 9-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Junior left-hander Eddie Mathis fired 8.0 shutout innings in the opener, and sophomore right-hander Jacob Nagel tossed a complete game in the tail end for the Knights (18-8, 5-1 GLVC). Bellarmine's offense racked up 12 hits in the second contest against UIndy (17-6, 3-3).

After getting hit pretty hard in his previous outing against McKendree, Mathis (4-1) was masterful against the Greyhounds, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in 8.0 innings. The southpaw retired the side in order in four frames and didn't allow more than one hit in any inning.

Junior center fielder Alex Phillips delivered a two-run single in the second inning. Senior catcher Brady Pfaadt walked and junior right fielder Zac Wiley doubled to start the third, and both scored on a two-out infield error by the Greyhounds for a 4-0 lead. Bellarmine wouldn't score again until senior shortstop Drew Greenwood led off the ninth with a double and scored on junior third baseman Josh Finerty's sacrifice fly.

Mathis didn't require much run production. Down 5-0, UIndy scored a pair of unearned runs against senior right-hander Duncan Amrein in the ninth. Amrein sewed up the win with a strikeout, his second of the frame. Greenwood had two of the Knights' six hits in the opener as they dealt Jake Sprinkle (4-1) his first loss.

Bellarmine's strong work on the mound continued in the second game as Nagel (4-1) collected his first complete game of the season. He threw all 7.0 innings, allowing a single earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Senior left fielder Griffin Neuer blasted his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. Bellarmine then blew the game open behind a six-run fourth inning that featured five extra-base hits.

Wiley led off the frame with a double down the left-field line and scored on Finerty's double to left center. Junior first baseman Jacob Pendred followed three batters later with a two-run triple to right, and sophomore center fielder Bobby Brokamp added an RBI single. Greenwood continued the onslaught with an RBI triple to right center, and Pfaadt clubbed an RBI double to the same area.

The outburst pushed Bellarmine's lead to 8-2 and the Knights tacked on another run in the fifth. Wiley went 3 for 4 with two doubles in the tail end. Pfaadt and Finerty chipped in two hits apiece.

Bellarmine plays at Indianapolis in another doubleheader starting at noon (ET) Saturday.
