LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senior
Marissa Kovach became the Bellarmine University women's tennis program's all-time career wins leader in an 8-1 victory over Southern Indiana on Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
Kovach amassed her 111th career win with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Alex Jamison at No. 4 singles. That victory pushed Kovach one ahead of Rebecca Porter (2008-12) in the record books.
Bellarmine (17-1, 2-0 GLVC) won its seventh straight match, dispatching Southern Indiana (7-11, 0-2) after nearly sweeping the Screaming Eagles one day after knocking off the Midwest Region's top-ranked team in Indianapolis.
"Although we were proud of our accomplishment yesterday, we knew that it would not have meant anything had we lost this match today," Knights Coach
John Mican said.
Bellarmine didn't have anything close to a letdown. Junior
Maggie Walroth and sophomore
Ashley Jonathan at No. 1, sophomore
Jennifer Skonieczny and freshman
Ava Ratcliff at No. 2 and seniors
Mairin Cotter and
Bess Fley at No. 3 completed a doubles sweep, winning each match by four games or more.
"We came out strong in doubles and rode that momentum into the singles play," Mican said.
Indeed, Skonieczny rallied to win at No. 1 singles after dropping the first set and Walroth (No. 2), Jonathan (No. 3), Kovach and freshman
Aubrey Smith (No. 6) were all victorious in straight sets.
"When we play against USI, you can throw our records out the window because we know we will have to really earn the win, and they never quit until the final point," Mican said. "We've had some great battles over the years and today was another good one."
Bellarmine hosts Lewis next Saturday.
