LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With each ball traveling high toward Newburg Road, the questions became less about if
Griffin Neuer's shots were going to land over the Knights Field fence, but where exactly they were finally going to descend.
On Sunday, the Bellarmine University senior left fielder walloped two more home runs to boost his total to three for the four-game series as the Knights swept Hillsdale for the second straight day, this time by scores of 8-4 and 8-2.
Neuer unloaded a three-run homer in Saturday's series opener for Bellarmine (6-3), which has won six straight games. On Sunday, he launched a two-run homer in the first contest against Hillsdale (2-10) and followed with a three-run blast in the finale. The latter round-tripper cleared the scoreboard in right field before landing.
Senior left-hander
Hunter Spencer (1-0) earned the victory in the opener after allowing two earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings. When he wasn't hitting home runs, Neuer found the time to pitch a scoreless inning of relief.
Junior third baseman
Josh Finerty went 3 for 4 with three RBIs while sophomore center fielder
Bobby Brokamp added a pair of hits. Bellarmine scored two runs apiece in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings.
Senior shortstop
Drew Greenwood staked the Knights to a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the second, Neuer went deep with a man on in the third and Finerty followed a two-run single in the fourth with an RBI single in the sixth. Senior catcher
Brady Pfaadt chipped in an RBI double in the sixth as well.
In the second game, four different Bellarmine pitchers combined to allow only two runs. Freshman right-hander
Brandon Pfaadt started and struck out seven in 5.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander
Anthony Ethington (1-0) notched the win and fanned three in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Junior left-hander
Willie Poe followed with a scoreless frame, and senior right-hander
Duncan Amrein sewed up the victory and series sweep behind two strikeouts in the ninth.
The finale was knotted at 1 apiece until Neuer greeted the newly entered David Toth in the sixth with his towering three-run homer that carried over the scoreboard. The Knights added two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings to prevail comfortably.
Neuer was 2 for 3 with five RBIs in the second contest. Greenwood racked up three hits and Finerty notched two.
