LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The win may not have counted toward the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings, but
Eddie Mathis was in GLVC form.
On Friday at Knights Field, the junior left-hander piled up a career-high 11 strikeouts in a complete-game effort to lead the Bellarmine University baseball team to a 6-1 win over Southern Indiana.
Mathis (2-1) won his second straight outing and registered his first complete game this season for Bellarmine (7-5). He set the tone against GLVC colleague USI (6-7) by striking out two batters apiece over the first 3.0 innings. Mathis allowed seven hits and walked one while yielding a lone run in the ninth over 9.0 innings.
Freshman right fielder
Matt Higgins went 3 for 3 with an RBI as Bellarmine amassed 13 hits. After missing some games due to injury, junior designated hitter
Zac Wiley returned and went 2 for 5 with an RBI. Freshman first baseman
Jacob Mulcahy added a pair of hits, and senior shortstop
Drew Greenwood added a pair of RBIs.
Bellarmine left several runners on base over the first half of the game, but the Knights broke through with two runs in the sixth. Mulcahy led off the frame by ripping a double to center. Higgins drove him in with a double and later scored on a squeeze bunt by Greenwood.
Bellarmine racked up four more runs in the seventh. Senior catcher
Brady Pfaadt and Wiley began the stanza with back-to-back doubles, the latter scoring Pfaadt. Wiley eventually scored on a balk, junior center fielder
Alex Phillips drove in a run and Greenwood forced in another by drawing a walk with the bases loaded.
Drake McNamara ended Mathis' shutout bid in the ninth with an RBI double with no outs. Mathis followed by inducing three straight fly outs to sew up the complete-game win.
Bellarmine hosts Alderson Broaddus in a doubleheader starting at noon (ET) Saturday.
