Knights baseball splits for second straight day with Wisconsin-Parkside

SOMERS, Wisc. — The Bellarmine University baseball split again with Wisconsin-Parkside, defeating the Rangers 5-1 Sunday before falling 5-4 at Oberbruner Field in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The Knights (24-10, 9-3 GLVC) and Rangers (3-18, 2-6) both won two games in the series.

In Sunday's opener, Hunter Spencer (4-1) earned a complete-game win. The senior left-hander allowed one earned run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings. It was Spencer's second complete game of the season.

Bellarmine collected 11 hits. Senior shortstop Drew Greenwood, junior third baseman Josh Finerty and sophomore catcher Chris Gambert had two each.

Bellarmine scored its first run with two outs in the second inning. Junior first baseman Jacob Pendred followed Gambert's single with an RBI double. The Knights plated two more runs in the fifth on consecutive RBI singles by Greenwood and junior designated hitter Derek Burns and scored two additional runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Finerty.

In the finale, with Bellarmine trailing 5-4, Finerty led off the ninth with a double and advanced to third with one out but was stranded. The Knights outhit the Rangers 11-4 but left 13 runners on base.

Junior right fielder Zac Wiley doubled and walloped his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth to bring Bellarmine within one. Pendred went 3 for 5 and junior center fielder Alex Phillips added a pair of hits. The Knights rallied to knot the score at 3 with a three-run fourth on a Greenwood RBI and a two-run double by senior catcher Brady Pfaadt.

Freshman right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (4-2) took the loss, allowing five runs — three earned — in 4.2 innings. Sophomore right-hander Anthony Ethington tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Bellarmine plays a doubleheader Tuesday at Kentucky Wesleyan. First pitch is at 1 p.m. (ET).
