DANVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team completed an undefeated preseason with a 2-0 road win over Centre on Saturday.
Freshman midfielder
Lauren Mackey scored from 25 yards out with roughly 1 minute remaining before halftime, and senior midfielder
Jordan Chlebowy converted a header off a corner kick about midway through the second half. Freshman forward
Isabella Zamborini assisted on both goals.
"I thought this was once again a very good preseason test against another good Centre team," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "They had some very good strings of play that tested us. We did a pretty good job of battling through a sluggish start and keeping them off the board early."
The contest marked Bellarmine's third and final exhibition of the preseason as the Knights also defeated Marian 2-0 and Spalding 7-0. Centre is a perennial Division III NCAA Tournament team, earning seven straight trips to the "Big Dance." Tinius said the Colonels controlled the ball more than his squad in the first half, but the Knights settled in and capitalized on a pair of opportunities.
"We didn't have as much sustained possession as I would have liked to start the game but you will have days like that," Tinius said. "We did muster some good moments in the counter until we could get on the ball more in the second half, and we got a goal off a set piece, which was good to see.
"While we need to play better, it was a step forward to find two goals. That was a game that we probably let end in another tie last year."
Bellarmine opens the regular season Friday at sixth-ranked Grand Valley State.
