ROLLA, Mo. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday with a commanding 4-0 road victory over Missouri S&T.
Junior forward
Annabel Moore and freshman forward
Isabella Zamborini both tallied a goal and an assist for Bellarmine (3-2, 1-0 GLVC), while senior defender
Madison Stephens and junior forward
Olivia Taylor both added a goal against the Miners (1-3, 0-1). The Knights blanked their third straight opponent and seized a 3-0 lead at halftime.
"That was a great way to kick off conference play," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "Our movement in the first half was much improved. To get three goals was obviously a dream start, and I actually thought we left a couple of the easier ones out there. We dipped a little in the second half, but it's hard to keep that up for an entire game. I thought the goal we did score in the second half was a product of some very good movement off the ball, and we kept another shutout."
A shade over seven minutes into the match, Stephens sank a penalty kick to give Bellarmine a 1-0 lead. The advantage was boosted to 2-0 in the 20th minute when Moore made a run down the left side and crossed to Taylor, who laced a shot into the net. The appearance marked Taylor's first of the season after returning from injury.
In the 25th minute, Zamborini made a quick pass to Moore after a throw-in, and Moore fired a one-touch shot just inside the far post for a 3-0 lead.
"I thought
Annabel Moore's first half was her best in a Bellarmine uniform and was really the catalyst for a lot of things," Tinius said.
In the second half, Zamborini raced to a well-placed through ball and, after a nice save by the Miners' goalkeeper, punched in a rebound to cap Bellarmine's scoring. Continuing a theme, the Knights were very accurate with their shots, as nine of 14 were on frame.
Bellarmine's defense limited Missouri S&T to only five shots, with just one coming on frame. Sophomore goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis and freshman
Abigail Burke, in her first collegiate action, combined for the shutout.
Bellarmine plays at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Maryville.
"It was good to see Liv back out there and get Abigail her first minutes," Tinius said. "Now we prepare for a very difficult opponent on Sunday and try to get home with two results."
