ROLLA, Mo. — Sophomore midfielder
Micah Linscott scored two first-half goals as the visiting Bellarmine University men's soccer team defeated Missouri S&T 2-0 Friday in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.
Junior forward
Tomas Bernedo notched an assist for Bellarmine (2-2, 1-0 GLVC) while freshman goalkeeper
Connor Range collected his second shutout of the season. The Knights gained a 2-0 lead over the Miners (0-4, 0-1) at halftime and were never threated in the second half.
In the 13th minute, after a Miners goal kick, Bernedo headed the ball forward and tapped to a streaking Linscott, who ripped in a shot for a 1-0 lead.
Linscott added his second goal in the 21st minute. After a booming kick by Range, a Miners defender rose for a header but inadvertently hit it backward. Linscott pounced on it and sank an open shot for a 2-0 advantage.
The score would remain unchanged at halftime and through the second half, although Bellarmine had plenty more opportunities to add to its lead. The Knights finished with a 21-4 superiority in shots, including 8-1 on goal as the defense stiffened after allowing three goals against Lee in its previous effort.
Bellarmine plays at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Maryville.
