ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—The Bellarmine volleyball team pushed No. 5 Lewis to four sets, but fell 3-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match on Friday in Neil Carey Arena.
Bellarmine got a career-high 15 kills from
Katie Adams as the senior right side hitter posted an attack percentage of .367. Junior
Jacquie Hornung registered her second straight and fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs.
The host Flyers got a big night from Alexandria Preuss, who rang up 23 kills while hitting at a .375 clip. Two Lewis players achieved double-doubles with Elizabeth Hyland (12 kills/13 digs) and Abby Becker (53 assists/10 digs) accomplishing the feat.
Lewis jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the match taking 25-19 and 25-15 wins in the first two sets.
The Knights avoided the sweep with a hard-fought, 25-23 third set victory. The Flyers took an early five-point lead in the set, but the Knights fought back to tie it at 19 only to see Lewis take the next two points. Bellarmine responded with a 5-0 run to take it to set point, but couldn't close out the Flyers as Lewis won two consecutive points to trim the BU lead to 24-23. Adams finally sealed the win for the Knights with her 13th kill of the night.
In the fourth set, Bellarmine jumped to a quick 7-3 lead. This time Lewis made the comeback, knotting the score at 12 and going on to build an 18-14 lead. After the Knights crept to within two at 20-18, The Flyers closed the match with a 5-0 run to clinch the victory.
Lewis (10-2, 4-0 GLVC) put together a solid hitting night and finished with an attack percentage of .336. By contrast, the Knights hit just .135 on the night. The Flyers also enjoyed a 13-3 block advantage while out-digging the Knights 69-63.
Bellarmine, which slipped to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in league play, is back in action tomorrow at the University of Indianapolis as the Knights play their fifth straight road match.
