Knights volleyball falls in straight sets to No. 14 Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Freshman Bailey Roszman registered a match-high 18 kills, but the visiting Bellarmine University volleyball team fell 3-0 Saturday to No. 14 Rockhurst in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the Mason-Halpin Field House.

Bellarmine (9-8, 3-6 GLVC) was competitive with Rockhurst (16-2, 7-1) for much of the three sets, but the Hawks swept them by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-21.

Roszman, whose 18 kills in only three sets were her third-highest total of the season, had a sterling .438 hitting percentage. Sophomore Izzie Salameh was also effective with nine kills. Freshman Sam Rickert set a new season and career high with 20 assists, senior Jordyn Kuchenbrod collected a match-best 19 digs and sophomore Abbie Oetting had four blocks.

Karli Reichert led Rockhurst with 11 kills. The Hawks had a .259 hitting percentage compared to the Knights' .187. Rockhurst held a slight edge in kills (43-42), assists (39-37) and digs (53-50). Bellarmine was hurt by seven service errors.

Rockhurst built a comfortable 17-7 lead in the first set, but Bellarmine stormed back with a 4-0 run and then a 5-0 surge to get within 23-21. The teams split the next two points, but the Hawks sealed the set on a Knights service error.

In the second set, Bellarmine was within 15-12, but the Hawks built their lead to 20-14 and comfortably won the frame from there.

Bellarmine led for much of the third set. Roszman bookended a 4-0 spurt with kills that boosted the Knights' advantage to 16-11. Rockhurst responded with a 7-1 run to take the lead and momentum. With the match tied at 19, the Hawks captured the next four points and Bellarmine couldn't recover.

Bellarmine hosts Southern Indiana at 7 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.
