LOUISVILLE, Ky.—After pulling off an upset of a top 10 opponent to start the Labor Day weekend, the Bellarmine field hockey team couldn't close the holiday in the same manner, falling to No. 10 Bloomsburg 5-0 on Monday in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The visiting Huskies dominated time of possession and held a shot advantage of 25-11 and were awarded seven more penalty corners (11-7) than the Knights.
"Today we didn't play very well fundamentally," Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker said. "Passing and receiving skills put us on the defensive end for extended periods, and credit Bloomsburg for capitalizing on our mistakes."
Bloomsburg put a score on the board just five minutes into the game when Erica Krebs dribbled to the right side of the circle and slipped a shot into the far left portion of the goal. Ten minutes later, the Huskies struck again when Ali McKay deflected in a hard cross from Tesa Hoffman.
The final score of the first period came with less than 30 seconds on the clock as Krebs tallied her second goal of the game off a feed from Willow Perkins.
The Huskies kept up the pressure in the second period and added two more scores while Bloomsburg goalie Hannah Barnard made five saves in the second stanza to keep the Knights off the scoreboard and record the shutout.
Bellarmine goalie
Heather Gregory was saddled with the loss, but the junior out of Louisville's Sacred Heart turned in a solid effort with 10 saves. Freshman
Breanna McWhorter also saw time in the cage for the Knights and stopped one of the two shots on goal she faced.
Blankenbaker said the Knights have some positive takeaways from the game. "We played hard and hustled until the end, which was a good thing to see," he said. "We will watch this game together and see our deficiencies, then get on the field to work on getting better this week."
Bellarmine hits the road for its next two games. On Saturday, the Knights will play at Indiana University of Pennsylvania then stay in "The Keystone State for a Sunday tilt against Seton Hill.
