Bellarmine falls on the road as Saints post 4-0 shutout

GAFFNEY, S.C.—The Bellarmine University field hockey team fell 4-0 to homestanding Limestone College on Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.

Limestone notched two goals in each half, and Saints goalies Susie Williams and Jordan Penning recorded four saves to post the shutout as Bellarmine managed just four shots on goal.

Overall, the Saints outshot the Knights 11-6 and held an 11-7 edge in penalty corners. Kelly Diplock was the leading scorer, netting two goals in the game.

"Unfortunately, today was not our day," said Bellarmine Coach Mark Blankenbaker. "We played well the first 20 minutes of the game.  It was very even; we were passing the ball well, gaining corners and playing patient defense."

Blankenbaker said that the Knights simply didn't maintain their level of play.  "The second half was a different story," he said.  "I think the two-goal deficit got into our heads, and we went back to our bad habits and individual play.  I give credit to Limestone as they out-hustled us to the ball and wanted it more. Hopefully we can learn from the loss and get ready for next weekend's game against Lindenwood."

The Knights slip to 5-4 on the season while the Saints improve to 4-3.

Bellarmine's next action comes on Saturday, when it travels to St. Charles, Missouri to face the Lions of Lindenwood.
