Hawks pull away from Knights women's basketball down stretch

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rockhurst pulled away inside the last few minutes to hand the Bellarmine University women's basketball team a 62-52 loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday at the Mason-Halpin Field House.

Junior forward Mallory Schwartz registered a career-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals for Bellarmine (8-7, 2-5 GLVC), which dropped its third straight game. Junior guard Katie Downey added 10 points and freshman guard Kathleen Scott chipped in nine and four assists against Rockhurst (6-9, 2-5), which ended a four-game losing streak.

"We've got to get better," Knights Coach Chancellor Dugan said. "Mallory had a great game, but we're not getting the same type of effort and results from some of the leaders that had been doing that before."

In a game which saw 11 ties and 14 lead changes, Rockhurst pushed to the victory by commanding the final five minutes. With 5:24 left, junior center Ally Mayhaus converted an old-fashioned three-play to give Bellarmine a 47-44 lead. However, the Hawks responded with a game-clinching 13-2 run over the next three minutes.

"In the fourth quarter, they got too many offensive rebounds and second chances, and they made them," Dugan said.

The contest was close throughout. Rockhurst led 15-13 after one quarter, but Bellarmine gained a 29-28 halftime lead on a basket by Schwartz. The Hawks led 42-40 after three periods.

After a solid shooting effort in the first half, Bellarmine made only five of its 25 field-goal attempts in the second half. Madeline Ronshausen was a standout for Rockhurst, scoring a game-high 20 points while sinking four of her five 3-point attempts.

"I feel like we're getting good looks," Dugan said. "We're not hitting layups. You have to make those. I'm not talking about one position — everybody has to start making those."

Bellarmine hosts Drury on Thursday and Missouri S&T on Saturday.
