Women's soccer earns 2-0 victory over Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team scored once in each half as the Knights collected a 2-0 victory over Illinois Springfield on Friday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Kiwanis Stadium.

Sophomore forward Isabella Zamborini and senior midfielder Kenzi Gooley registered the goals for Bellarmine (8-3, 5-3 GLVC), which won for the fifth time in six matches. Freshman forward Heavyn O'Connell tallied an assist against the Prairie Stars (5-6, 4-4).

"What a great effort from our team tonight," Knights Coach Chris Tinius said. "We played a good team, on the road, in cold weather, on a field that got chewed up during the men's game. It would have been an easy night to mail one in, but our players were efficient and workmanlike and picked up a big win."

Bellarmine tied a season high with two goals for the third time in the last five games. The first score Friday came in the 30th minute, as Zamborini took a pass from O'Connell and laced a shot from the top of the box over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms for a 1-0 lead. It was Zamborini's fourth goal of the season, and second game-winner.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime and through most of the second half before Bellarmine tacked on an insurance goal in the 87th minute. From deep on the left wing, Gooley blasted a free kick that found its way through the UIS defense and inside the far post for her first goal of the season.

Bellarmine posted its seventh shutout as sophomore goalkeeper Elyssa Francis corralled six saves. The Knights had a 14-10 advantage in shots, although UIS had a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.

Bellarmine plays at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Lewis.
