ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 stalemate with Lewis on Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at wind-blasted Lewis Stadium.
Junior midfielder
Samantha Ferry collected the goal for Bellarmine (8-3-1, 5-3-1 GLVC). Junior midfielder
Camryn Pictor and senior defender
Rosie Taylor were awarded assists on the first-half goal against the Flyers (6-4-2, 4-3-2).
There was a fierce wind whipping through Lewis Stadium, providing each team an advantage offensively for a half. Not surprisingly, Bellarmine scored in the first half with the wind at the Knights' back, while the Flyers found the net in the second half after the teams flipped sides.
Bellarmine had the favorable side in the first overtime and Lewis in the second extra session. Both defenses did an exceptional job turning back any promising build-ups en route to the draw.
"The wind was definitely a factor," Knights Coach
Chris Tinius said. "Both teams took advantage when they had it and got a goal but in the end neither of us could find a second, so that's where it leaves us. It's not much more complicated than that."
Bellarmine struck in the 21st minute. The final piece after a combination of passes from Taylor and Pictor, Ferry unloaded a shot from distance in the middle of the field that cleared Lewis' goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. It was Ferry's third goal of the season.
Lewis was strong in the attack in the first 15 minutes of the second half and eventually knotted the score at 1-1 in the 60th minute. Kailey Parnello finished off a cross for her sixth goal of the year.
Both teams attempted two shots in the overtimes, coming when each had the wind advantage. Lewis had an 11-6 edge for the match. Both teams had two shots on frame, and two corner kicks.
"What would our last year in the league be without one more trip to Lewis for a tie," Tinius said. "On one hand, we faced a good team in very good form of late and got out of there with a result. On the other hand, we weren't able to carry over some of the concepts that looked so good on Friday (in a 2-0 win at Illinois Springfield). We got by today mainly on effort and not much thoughtfulness to our game."
Bellarmine plays the third of four straight road games Friday at Drury.
