Men's soccer's unbeaten streak reaches 20 with 2-1 win over Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The No. 17 Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored late in the first half and early in the second half in pulling out a 2-1 victory over Lewis on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Lewis Stadium.

Senior midfielder Gilio Aviles and junior midfielder Micah Linscott tallied goals for Bellarmine (8-0-3, 5-0-3), which bumped its unbeaten streak to 20 dating back to last season. Senior midfielder Donald Aviles and senior forward Tomas Bernedo chipped in assists against Lewis (7-3-2, 4-3-2).

Lewis entered the weekend 4-0 at home with four shutouts. Both streaks were snapped Friday as Indianapolis edged the Flyers 1-0.

Bellarmine became the second team to score on Lewis' home turf when Gilio Aviles was the recipient of great fortune with a little over two minutes left before halftime. He sent a cross near the right post that took a hop to C.J. Couper. The ball slid through the fingers of the Flyers' goalkeeper, and when he attempted to recover with his hands he poked it into the near side of the net. It was Aviles' second goal this season.

Shortly after halftime, Bellarmine took a 2-0 lead. Near midfield, Donald Aviles rammed back a Lewis goal kick with a header and it was tapped forward by Bernedo. The ball got underneath a defender's clear attempt and Linscott then beat the defense to the ball, slotting a shot under the charging keeper and into the net. Linscott's fourth goal of the season came in the 51st minute.

While not to the extent of the first goal, Bellarmine was pretty generous as well in setting up Lewis for its score. The Knights committed an unnecessary foul that allowed the Flyers a dangerous free kick. Domenic Baumann took advantage, converting a goal off an assist from Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu in the 66th minute.

Bellarmine shored things back up defensively from there and prevented Lewis from delivering the equalizer. The Knights finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots, including 6-1 on goal. Bellarmine didn't allow the Flyers an attempt in the first half.

Bellarmine plays the third of four straight road games Friday at Drury.
