Newberry nets golden goal to turn back Bellarmine 2-1 in OT

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Senior day had a heartbreaking ending for the Bellarmine field hockey team as the Newberry Wolves scored 2:09 into overtime to snatch a victory at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Saturday.

The first half was played primarily in the middle of the field with a total of just five shots taken.  However, Newberry found the back of the cage just 57 seconds before halftime when Brady Keeler ripped a shot from just inside the circle off a penalty corner insert from Kristyna Oyola.

The Wolves took that 1-0 lead into the break, then came out aggressively to start the third period.  Bellarmine managed to keep Newberry from extending its lead although the Wolves owned an 8-1 shot advantage in the quarter.

Bellarmine found its rhythm offensively in the fourth quarter and started attacking the goal with a sense of urgency.  That increased intensity paid off in the form of a penalty stroke which Merit Harris buried to knot the game at one apiece.  The Knights continued to put pressure on the Wolves defense, outshooting Newberry 7-2 in the quarter, but regulation time expired with neither team able to break the deadlock.

In the extra session, Newberry started out on the attack quickly picked up a penalty corner.  Although the Wolves misfired on that attempt, Newberry retained possession. Keeler was able to find a seam inside the circle and when the Bellarmine goalie came out to play her, she was able to shuffle a pass to Haley Smith, who took one dribble to her left and shot into an open cage for the golden goal.

Both teams entered today 8-3, so Bellarmine falls to 8-4 on the season while the Wolves improve to 9-4.

Prior to the game, Bellarmine recognized its seven senior members of the field hockey team:  Mariana Flores Gutierrez, Heather Gregory, Merit Harris, Brittanny Macnab, Lindsay Reynolds, Lorna Screen and Storm Thompson.  The group will play its final game at Frazier Stadium tomorrow when Bellarmine closes out its home schedule at 1 p.m. against Lindenwood.
