LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Despite a sizable advantage in shots, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team played to a scoreless tie with William Jewell on Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
It was the second straight scoreless stalemate for Bellarmine (11-3-3, 8-3-3 GLVC), which has been shut out four times this season, all at home. The Knights owned a 25-8 shot advantage, including 9-3 on frame, over William Jewell (3-12-2, 3-10-1) but couldn't locate the net.
"Another day, another very good performance, another dropped result because we don't get it done in front of goal," Knights Coach
Chris Tinius said. "We had three chances that were harder to miss than they were to score, and that's the story of the game."
Bellarmine doubled, at the least, William Jewell's shots in all four stanzas. The Knights had advantages of 10-4 and 7-3 in the first and second halves and 4-1 and 4-0 in the two overtimes. Bellarmine's stout defense posted its 12th shutout in what was a relatively one-sided affair everywhere but the scoreboard.
"I thought we were pretty good in possession and obviously created a lot of chances, quality chances," Tinius said. "Twelve shutouts is phenomenal, especially against a team that, when they did have chances, came at us pretty hard. We somehow keep doing good things and, at the same time, making it harder on ourselves. I'm not sure how that's possible!"
Tinius said Bellarmine's lack of scoring and the continued excellence in stopping an opponent from scoring are both team-based.
"Let's be clear that the scoring is not just on so-called attacking players," he said. "I thought that for all the help we had joining in from deeper positions, our service wasn't as good as it's been most of the year. On the flipside, the shutouts involve everyone, including good work from attacking players. The entire team shares in both aspects, and we'll keep pushing to improve."
Bellarmine will host Rockhurst at noon (ET) Sunday, which also represents Senior Day.
"We have to embrace the chance to bounce back against a good team and try to get the final piece on track before the conference tournament," Tinius said. "We also look forward to honoring our six seniors."
