LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Knights men's soccer team sealed the deal Sunday on one of the most significant accomplishments in Bellarmine athletics history.
The 12th-ranked Knights completed an unbeaten regular season with a 1-0 victory over Rockhurst in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
That was just the first bit of program history for Bellarmine. At 13-0-4 overall and 10-0-4 in the GLVC, the Knights set new program records for total wins and conference victories.
Junior defender
Jonas Skulstad, who returned this weekend after missing several games due to injury, scored a second-half goal for Bellarmine, which pushed its unbeaten streak to 26 dating back to last season. Junior midfielder
Collin Rose assisted on the goal against Rockhurst (5-10-2, 4-9-2).
Bellarmine earned the two-seed in the GLVC Tournament. The Knights will host seven-seed Lindenwood at 2:30 p.m. (ET) next Sunday.
After scoring eight goals in Friday's romp over William Jewell, Bellarmine's offense was largely held in check by Rockhurst, even when the Hawks played a man down the entire second half after a player was issued a red card in the first half.
Bellarmine finished with a single shot on goal, but that's all the Knights would need. In the 67th minute, Skulstad rammed in a header off a corner kick by Rose. It was the first goal of the season for the reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Year.
Rockhurst had its chances. Bellarmine sophomore goalkeeper
Connor Range had a diving save in the second half, and senior defender
Chris Hunt had a defensive save after heading away a Rockhurst header that appeared destined for the top left corner of the net.
The teams finished with 12 shots apiece. The Knights recorded their seventh shutout.
