Women's basketball triumphs over Ohio Dominican in season opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Junior guard Breia Torrens scored a career-high 20 points, and the Bellarmine University women's basketball team pulled away from visiting Ohio Dominican late in the fourth quarter as the Knights debuted with an 82-71 victory Friday.

Senior center Ally Mayhaus and junior forward Lauren Deel both came within one rebound of double-doubles for Bellarmine (1-0) on the opening day of the Midwest Region Crossover. Mayhaus registered 11 points and nine rebounds, while Deel posted 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Mallory Schwartz added 15 points, six rebounds and three steals against Ohio Dominican (0-1).

With about four minutes left, Bellarmine was clinging to a 69-65 lead, but the Knights followed with a game-clinching 11-1 run. Schwartz and Mayhaus combined for nine points during the surge. Bellarmine knocked down eight of its 14 shots in the fourth quarter.

Bellarmine heated up in the second half, shooting 53.1 percent over the final two periods. The Knights buried six of their 13 3-point attempts after halftime. Torrens canned four trifectas for the game and had four assists.

Bellarmine controlled the boards, outrebounding Ohio Dominican 44-33 while grabbing 21 offensive rebounds. The Knights had a 22-11 advantage in second-chance points. Senior forward Allison Van Dyke had seven rebounds.

Led by Torrens, Bellarmine had a 41-18 superiority in bench points. Sophomore guard Presley Brown was highly productive, tallying eight points, a game-high six assists, five rebounds and three steals in 20 minutes.

Ohio Dominican had four players score in double figures. Alexa Fisher paced the Panthers with 17 points, Olivia Fox had 14, Angela Troyer chipped in 11 and Kennedy Schlabach added 10. Ohio Dominican shot 48 percent, but the Panthers also had 23 turnovers.

Bellarmine led 13-12 after one quarter, Ohio Dominican took a 32-31 advantage at halftime and the Knights gained a 56-53 edge after three periods.

Bellarmine hosts Cedarville at 5:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
