Cedarville fends off Knights women's basketball behind long-range shooting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Cedarville turned back a fourth-quarter charge by the Bellarmine University women's basketball team with a flurry of 3-pointers as the visiting Yellow Jackets defeated the Knights 77-64 on Saturday.

Bellarmine (1-1) and Cedarville (1-1) both split their two games in the Midwest Region Crossover. Knights junior guard Breia Torrens set a new career high for the second straight contest, following her 20-point effort against Ohio Dominican on Friday with 23 against the Yellow Jackets.

Senior center Ally Mayhaus posted 14 points, six rebounds and four blocks for the Knights, while junior guard Tasia Jeffries chipped in 13 points. Torrens and Jeffries combined for seven 3-pointers. Abby Wolford led four Yellow Jackets in double figures with 14 points.

Cedarville sank 10 3-pointers and took the lead for good at 9-6 on a trifecta by Emily Chapman a little over four minutes into the first quarter. Wolford hit a desperation 3-pointer heading into halftime to push the Yellow Jackets' advantage to 39-25, and the lead swelled to 19 in the third quarter.

Bellarmine rallied in the fourth quarter behind a 12-3 run. The Knights got within five on two occasions, the latter with 5:33 left on a jumper by junior forward Lauren Deel. Bellarmine had a chance to get within three but missed a shot from close range.

Cedarville responded with a 12-0 run that consisted of four 3-pointers. The final trey boosted the Yellow Jackets' lead to 71-54 with 2:02 left. In addition to the triples, Cedarville canned 21 of 25 from the free throw line to help account for the difference.

Cedarville had a 38-30 rebounding advantage and 25-9 superiority in bench points.

Bellarmine will play at 3:30 p.m. (ET) next Saturday at Central State.
