LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team took control of the game in the second quarter and left no doubt in the third.
On Thursday in Knights Hall, Bellarmine put together one of its best performances of the season in an 82-60 romp over Indianapolis in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Junior center
Ally Mayhaus canned 8-of-11 shots in scoring a career-high 18 points for the surging Knights (14-9, 8-7 GLVC), who have won four straight and six of their last seven. Sophomore guard
Breia Torrens added 14 points and her seven steals against UIndy (9-16, 3-12) were two shy of a program record. Senior center
Liza Tibbs contributed 10 points as Bellarmine received immense production at the five position.
Led by Torrens, Bellarmine piled up a season-high 18 steals. The 30 turnovers the Knights forced were also a season high. As a result, Bellarmine posted a 25-5 superiority in points off turnovers. The Knights also blocked seven shots, tying their second-highest amount of the season.
"The girls really understood what we wanted them to do," Knights Coach
Chancellor Dugan said. "I had no issues with how we played defense in the first half."
Continuing a theme for the game, Bellarmine tied a season best after shooting 50 percent, and the 82 points the Knights racked up were its most against a GLVC opponent. Bellarmine was particularly potent in the second and third quarters, shooting right around 63 percent in both as its lead ballooned.
Junior guard
Katie Downey sank Bellarmine's first shot but after nearly four minutes passed that was still the only score of the contest. That was not a sign of things to come. Bellarmine took a 14-12 lead after one quarter and began heating up in the second as junior guard
Mikayla Berry knocked a jumper with 7:28 left for the Knights' first double-digit lead.
Bellarmine then closed the first half on a 13-4 run to take a 39-22 at the intermission. Mayhaus and Torrens combined for 23 points over the first two periods. The Knights forced UIndy into 18 turnovers by the break.
Junior forward
Mallory Schwartz spotted Mayhaus for a basket to open the second half, and Schwartz converted a feed from Downey to cap an 11-0 burst out of the locker room. Bellarmine's lead swelled to 28 at that point, and the Knights continued cruising to a regular-season sweep of the Greyhounds.
"I thought we came out in the third quarter and were so focused," Dugan said. "I was so pleased with those first five minutes. That really got us going. We really played great that quarter."
Bellarmine had 13 players score, 12 grab at least one rebound and 11 distribute at least one assist.
Bellarmine hosts No. 15 Lewis at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
