INDIANAPOLIS — Coach
Chancellor Dugan didn't believe her Bellarmine University women's basketball team was invested early, but the Knights got the job done late.
On Saturday at Nicoson Hall, Bellarmine outscored Indianapolis 28-14 in the fourth quarter in rallying to a 65-57 victory over the Greyhounds in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Sophomore forward
Lauren Deel hit 8-of-9 shots and tallied a team-high 17 points for Bellarmine (11-9, 5-7 GLVC), which has won three of its last four. Junior guard
Mikayla Berry added 14 points, senior center
Ally Mayhaus chipped in 10 points and five rebounds and junior forward
Mallory Schwartz contributed nine and seven rebounds against UIndy (8-14, 2-10). Junior guard
Katie Downey also had seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
After trailing 15-14 after one quarter, Bellarmine led 28-26 at halftime, but Indianapolis regained the lead in the third and took a 43-37 advantage into the fourth. The Greyhounds entered on a three-game losing streak, including a 78-43 setback to Southern Indiana on Thursday.
"I don't think we were emotionally ready for tonight's game," Dugan said, "but they took what we talked about in the locker room at halftime and executed it."
With a shade over eight minutes remaining in the fourth, Indianapolis led 49-42 after a 3-pointer by Katie Sowa, who sank five triples in the game. It only took Bellarmine about two minutes to tie the game as Mayhaus knocked down a jumper to cap a 7-0 run.
A revitalized Deel took over with less than four minutes remaining. She scooped in a layup off a drive in giving Bellarmine the lead for good at 53-52. Deel then swooped in on what appeared would be a wide-open lay-in attempt by Taylor Dillard and blocked the shot. The swat directly led to a 3-pointer by freshman guard
Bailee Harney for a 56-52 lead.
Laura Thomas, who registered a game-high 25 points, made a basket to get UIndy within two with 1:33 left, but Deel countered with an old-fashioned three-point play. The Greyhounds answered on a Sowa trifecta with 59 seconds left, but Schwartz scrapped for a pair of offensive rebounds and stuck a putback for a 61-57 lead with 27 seconds remaining. It was perhaps the play of the game.
"She jumped over her own teammate (to get an offensive rebound)," Dugan said. "That's where Mal is the glue that keeps us together. I was pleased with our rebounding. We had some kids really step up tonight."
Bellarmine outrebounded Indianapolis 37-25. The Knights were especially dominant on the offensive boards, ripping down 16 to only three for the Greyhounds. As a result, Bellarmine had a 14-2 superiority in second-chance points.
Indianapolis had a better shooting percentage than Bellarmine (48.9 to 42.4), but the Knights minimized that with the rebounding and forced turnovers. The Knights had a respectable 12 turnovers and forced the Greyhounds into 19. Bellarmine turned the takeaways into 22 points while UIndy had just four of the same variety.
"I'm pleased with where we're heading," Dugan said.
Bellarmine's next four games are at home. The Knights begin the stretch Thursday against Illinois Springfield.
