LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Although shorthanded, the Bellarmine University women's tennis team still managed to defeat Lincoln Memorial 4-3 on Saturday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
The Knights improved to 4-1 despite an extremely quick turnaround where they played Georgetown College the previous night in Lexington, Kentucky. Bellarmine also overcame having to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match and the No. 6 singles contest against Lincoln Memorial (3-1) due to a player illness.
While senior
Maggie Walroth and junior
Jennifer Skonieczny won in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles, Lincoln Memorial secured the doubles point after adding the forfeit win to a No. 2 doubles victory.
Despite having to forfeit another contest in singles action, Bellarmine triumphed by winning four of the five contested matches. Skonieczny and Walroth, at Nos. 1 and 2, were victorious in straight sets, with Skonieczny winning a tiebreaker in the second frame over Johanna Delisse.
Sophomore
Ava Ratcliff outlasted Julia Valls 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 at No. 3, and sophomore
Aubrey Smith locked down the team triumph with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kiersten Waugh at No. 5.
"Aubrey was the last match on and played fearless tennis to clinch it," Knights Coach
John Mican said. "We were down a player and have had to battle through health issues this week, but winning sure does make you feel a lot better."
Bellarmine will meet Campbellsville next Saturday, Feb. 16, at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
