LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team will play its first road series in Great Lakes Valley Conference play as the Knights are set to visit Missouri-St. Louis.
Bellarmine (9-7, 2-1 GLVC) and UMSL (2-12, 1-2) will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday before playing a single game beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Bellarmine opened GLVC play at Knights Field by taking two of three from McKendree. The Knights cranked five homers and senior left-hander
Eddie Mathis took care of the rest in a 13-3 victory in the first game before the Bearcats scored three runs in the first and held on for a 4-3 win in the second contest. A strong start by senior left-hander
Alex Phillips and a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth by senior first baseman
Tyler Neeley lifted the Knights to a 5-3 win in the finale.
The latter victory was especially encouraging considering Bellarmine had started the season 0-5 in games decided by two runs or less. The Knights will attempt to fix another glitch against Missouri-St. Louis — they're 2-6 on the road thus far.
Bellarmine is hitting .320 as a team with 20 homers in 16 games. Senior right fielder
Zac Wiley is pacing the Knights with a .456 batting average and 19 RBIs while tying for the team high in homers with four alongside junior third baseman
Deylen Miley and senior first baseman
Tyler Neeley. Phillips is hitting .393 and Neeley is slugging .848.
Mathis (3-1) has won three straight starts and pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in the outing before that. Phillips hasn't recorded a decision yet but carries a 3.21 ERA over three starts. Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Pfaadt (1.93 ERA, two saves, 17 strikeouts in 14 innings) and junior right-hander
Anthony Ethington (2.93 in five appearances) have been primary arms out of the bullpen.
After dropping its first 10 games, Missouri-St. Louis has won two in a row entering the Bellarmine series. The Tritons won the series finale against GLVC rival Lewis, 5-4, and followed with a 13-11 midweek victory over Lindenwood. Jacob Stoker is leading the Tritons with a .323 batting average. Jason Stuckmeyer (2.77 ERA, 14 strikeouts in 13 innings) and Bobby Shallenberger (3.07, 12 in 14.2) have posted strong performances on the mound while appearing in both starting and relieving roles.
