Bellarmine rolls past Bobcats 9-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine Knights field hockey team bounced back from Friday's heartbreaking overtime loss in big way today at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, routing Frostburg State by the score of 9-1.   The nine goals are the most a Bellarmine field hockey team has scored in the regular season since the putting up 12 goals against Newberry in 2014.

Despite the large margin of victory, the game didn't start too well for the Knights.  Frostburg's Gabby Rachuba got free running down the right side and ripped a shot into the lower left portion of the cage just two minutes into the action to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.

The Knights got the equalizer five minutes later when Mandi Isom sent a ball from the right endline toward the cage, and Alex Hill corralled it and slipped it past the Frostburg goalie for a score.

Hill's goal sort of awakened the Bellarmine offense as the Knights scored twice in the next three minutes to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter of play.

Bellarmine scored early in the second period to extend the margin to three, and the Knights weren't seriously challenged the rest of the way as BU owned a 31-11 shot advantage in the game.

"What a great team win this afternoon," said Bellarmine Coach Devanny Boisvert.  "Everyone contributed on and off the field. Our focus was to support one another today - defensively and offensively, and we did a great job at this."

The scoring was spread between six different players.  Merit Harris, April Paulson and Isom all notched two goals apiece with Amber Hofenk Jerembo, Lexi Wingfield and Hill adding one each.

Defensively, Alexa Rastigue picked up her second defensive save of the year and Breanna McWhorter and Heather Gregory split time in the cage, combing for four saves.

Boisvert added that she was particularly pleased with her freshmen.  "I was happy to see freshman Kennedy DeDario fill our center back position in the second half. She made some great decisions, brought positive energy and communication to the field. I overall was impressed with our freshman class. They all got some experience today and I hope gained some confidence from it."

The Knights now hit the road for their next six games, not returning to Frazier Stadium until on Oct. 17 game against Belmont Abbey. Bellarmine's next action will come this coming Friday at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
