Knights win pair of matches on opening day of Bellarmine Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine volleyball team opened the Bellarmine Classic in impressive fashion, notching victories over Trevecca Nazarene and the University of Charleston in action at Knights Hall on Friday.
 
The Knights opened with a 3-1 victory over Trevecca Nazarene by outhitting the Trojans .281 to .081.  The strong hitting was led by Ashley Price and Abbie Oetting, who both registered a .458 attack percentage.  Meanwhile Jayme Scott led all hitters with 18 kills while swinging at a .289 clip.
 
Price made her presence felt both on the front and back lines with 14 kills, 12 digs and four assisted blocks. Meanwhile Oetting a force in the middle with 11 kills, a solo block and five assisted blocks.
 
The Knights took the first two sets 25-19, 25-20, but dropped set three 25-18 when they hit just .214. However, they came back to close out the match by hitting .409 to win set four 25-8.
 
Against Charleston in the last match of the day, Bellarmine flew past the Golden Eagles in straight sets, 25-14, 25-15, 25-21. Again, the Knights enjoyed a distinct advantage in the attack game, hitting .256 to just .033 for UC.
 
Izzie Salameh came up big for the Knights, making seven kills on just 11 swings for an attack percentage of .636.  Oetting and Price continued their solid play, recording 12 and 10 kills respectively.
 
Sophomore Sam Rickert totaled 70 assists in the two matches combined, and junior libero Karleigh Wilson came up with 26 digs on the day.
 
With the two victories, Bellarmine improves to 7-3 overall.  The Knights are back in action on Saturday, facing Georgia College and Cedarville.  Match times are 1:15 and 7:30 p.m.
