Bellarmine finishes Classic 4-0 with wins over Georgia College and Cedarville

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—There's no place like home.  At least not for the Bellarmine volleyball team.

Hosting their second straight tournament, the Knights chalked up two more wins on Saturday to finish the Bellarmine Classic 4-0 and open their 2019 home schedule with a sparkling 7-1 record.

Bellarmine opened play on Saturday by sweeping the Georgia College Bobcats in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) to set up a match with Cedarville, which also had won its first three contests in the Bellarmine Classic.  In the finale, the Knights pulled out a 3-1 victory behind a 19-kill, 17-dig performance by Jayme Scott

For the tournament, Bellarmine got stellar performances from a number of players, and junior Abbie Oetting was named the Classic's most valuable player after posting 46 kills (3.29/set) while hitting .418 on the week. She also registered 14 blocks in the tourney to average one per set.

Scott also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team by averaging a double-double with 49 kills and 43 digs in four matches. Her 19 kills and 17 digs against Cedarville represented new career highs for the freshman.

Other standout performances for the Knights included 38 kills and a .263 attack percentage from freshman Ashley Price while Izzie Salameh swung at a .279 clip in amassing 24 kills in the tourney.  Kristen O'Toole and Sam Rickert split time setting for the Knights with 82 and 76 assists respectively.  Bellarmine libero Karleigh Wilson was the digs leader with 56, including a career-high 23 against Cedarville.

In terms of single match performances,  Oetting and Scott were the offensive leaders against Georgia College with 12 and 10 kills while Emily Ernst paced the Knights defensively with 12 digs.  In the finale, top contributors for Bellarmine—in addition to the career-highs posted by Scott and Wilson—were Julia Dailey, who rang up 11 kills, and O'Toole with 43 assists.  Oetting added 11 kills and five blocks against the Yellow Jackets.

The Knights improve to 9-3 on the season, and get to stay at home when they open Great Lakes Valley Confernce play on Friday with a 7 p.m. match against Missouri S&T.
