Men's soccer rolls to 3-1 win over Trevecca Nazarene

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team made sure its first week of regular-season action ended just like it began.

On Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, three different players scored as Bellarmine dominated play in a 3-1 victory over Trevecca Nazarene.

Junior midfielders Micah Linscott and Greg Fischer posted a goal and an assist each for the Knights (2-0), who debuted Thursday with a 2-0 blanking of Ohio Dominican. Senior forward Tomas Bernedo added a goal for Bellarmine against the Trojans (0-2).

For the second straight match, Bellarmine's defense allowed a mere two shots, and none came in the first half. After the Knights had mass substitutions, Trevecca Nazarene's Michael Jones managed a goal in the 85th minute on a breakaway.

By that time, Bellarmine had long since piled up a 3-0 lead that easily could have been more if not for several superb saves by Trojans goalkeeper Andrew Bargh. Among his eight total, he had three kick saves.

Bellarmine didn't waste any time in building a 1-0 lead. In the seventh minute, Fischer passed to Linscott in the box and, after a few nifty dribbles, Linscott drove home the first Knights score.

That same combination, only in reverse, accounted for Bellarmine's second goal, which came just after halftime. Linscott's cross found Fischer near the far post, and he knocked it in for a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute.

Less than 10 minutes later, Bellarmine essentially put the game away on Bernedo's goal. He stole the ball from a defender a few feet outside the box and buried an open shot from 15 yards for a 3-0 advantage in the 56th minute. It was Bernedo's second goal of the season.

Bellarmine had a muscular 27-2 superiority in shots, including 11-1 on frame. The Knights had a 13-0 advantage in attempts in the first half and a 14-2 edge after the intermission. They also took all 10 of the match's corner kicks.

Bellarmine hosts Charleston at 7 p.m. (ET) Wednesday.
