BLOOMSBURG, Pa.—Bellarmine senior
Lindsay Reynolds scored 6:43 into overtime as the Bellarmine field hockey team stunned the No. 9 Bloomsburg Huskies on the road today at Steph Petit Stadium.
After the Knights drew a penalty corner with just over three and a half minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Reynolds delivered the insert then moved into scoring position and converted the golden goal off a pass from
Alex Hill.
Despite Bellarmine controlling the overtime period, the Huskies dominated the opening 60 minutes of play—outshooting the Knights 26-5 and owning a 21-7 advantage in penalty corners in regulation play. In the extra session, it was Bellarmine with the advantage, outshooting the Huskies 3-0 while both teams took one corner.
"Bloomsburg is another nationally ranked powerhouse that was going to test our mental toughness," said Bellarmine Coach
Devanny Boisvert, who picked up her first collegiate head coaching victory today. "We talked prior to the game that (mental toughness) was an important aspect that we had to focus on. With being a little tired from yesterday and having a long bus ride back home, our mental toughness was the game changer today."
Boisvert said the Huskies' ability to draw penalty corners allowed them to control the tempo in the first 60 minutes. However, the Knights' defense held firm on all 21 Bloomsburg penalty corners as the lone Husky goal came after a long pass that was deflected into the cage. Bellarmine goalie
Heather Gregory recorded nine important saves as she worked all 66:43 in the cage.
"Heather had another great showing today," Boisvert said. "She was tough in the cage and made some really impressive saves." The Bellarmine coach also was impressed with the play of
Jillian Fazio. "Jill had another stellar game in the backfield. Her great play in transition helped generate our attack. She's been a great fit for us as our center back."
The Knights actually owned a 1-0 lead for most of the game after Hill got Bellarmine on the scoreboard about midway through the second period when her shot ricocheted off Bloomsburg goalie Hannah Barnard's pads and into the goal. The Huskies didn't find the back of the cage until the game's 50th minute.
"I am so proud of this team," Boisvert concluded. "Through all the defensive corners, cards and overtime, they really dug deep today and overcame a really tough weekend of games."
Bellarmine now faces its third straight top 10 opponent in a row as No. 10 Limestone visits on Friday, Sept. 13 when the Knights make their regular season home debut at 6:30 p.m. in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
