LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Visiting Indianapolis hit two free throws in overtime and shut out the Bellarmine University women's basketball team in the extra session in defeating the Knights 55-53 on Monday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Indianapolis (12-4, 5-3 GLVC) completed a regular-season sweep of Bellarmine (9-6, 4-4) by a total of just five points, as the Greyhounds notched a 52-49 home win over the Knights on Dec. 3. Junior guard
Breia Torrens was the lone Bellarmine player to score in double figures with 11 points, while senior center
Ally Mayhaus collected eight, eight rebounds and four assists.
Indianapolis never held a lead in regulation time. Bellarmine senior guard
Tasia Jeffries sank a 3-pointer about a minute into the contest, and the Knights maintained an advantage until the 1:18 mark in the fourth when UIndy's Laura Thomas hit a jumper to tie it at 51 as the Greyhounds rallied after facing a 13-point halftime deficit.
Bellarmine junior forward
Lauren Deel and the Greyhounds' Paige Barrett followed by exchanging baskets, and the game went into overtime after the Knights missed a pair of go-ahead 3-point attempts.
Once there, neither team connected for a field goal, as both went 0 for 4 from the field. Mickey Sasson hit a free throw on UIndy's first possession of the extra session, and McKenzy Telfair sank another on the Greyhounds' final time with the ball in hand. Those accounted for the only two points of the overtime.
The latter free throw came with 2.7 seconds left. Bellarmine called timeout and advanced the ball. The Knights got off a desperation 3-point attempt, but it was off the mark.
The struggles after halftime negated a strong first half for Bellarmine, particularly from its bench. The Knights got 20 points off the bench in building a 30-17 lead. Freshman guard
Ashlee Harris, senior forward
Allison Van Dyke and sophomore guard
Kathleen Scott combined for 18 points, and Mayhaus had four assists.
Indianapolis asserted itself to start the third quarter and cut its deficit to four midway through the period. The Greyhounds shot only 20 percent in the first half, but they made good on 52 percent of their attempts over the third and fourth quarters.
Bellarmine will host Southwest Baptist at 5:45 p.m. (ET) Thursday and Drury at 1 p.m. Saturday.
