LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The top-ranked Bellarmine Knights overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but the No. 23 Indianapolis Greyhounds prevailed in the extra session to pull off the upset 81-76 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference battle in Knights Hall on Monday night.
The visitors capitalized on 11 first half turnovers by the Knights and UIndy's Trevor Lakes drilled a deep three at the buzzer as the Greyhounds built a 42-27 halftime lead.
Bolstered by a boisterous, near-capacity crowd, Bellarmine battled back in second period, methodically cutting into the Greyhound lead until
Ethan Claycomb's three pointer with 25 seconds remaining swished through the nets to knot the score at 70. Lakes missed a potential game-winner, and Bellarmine collected the rebound with 2.5 ticks on the clock. After calling a timeout, the Knights tried to run a last play but couldn't get off a shot in time and had to settle for overtime.
Bellarmine's
Alex Cook, who led all scorers with 21, converted a short shot in the lane on the Knights' initial possession to give them their first lead since early in the first half. Indianapolis converted a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession, but
Pedro Bradshaw answered for the Knights. However, the 74-72 lead would be Bellarmine's final advantage. The Knights went cold the final four minutes, missing their last eight shots as UIndy was able to pull out the upset by connecting on five of seven free throws coming down the stretch.
"It's a game of moments, and they (UIndy) won the moments," said Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport. "Give them credit. They hit their free throws, and we missed ours, and they hit the three at the end of the half."
The free throw line could have been the turning point in the game. Usually a strong point for the Knights, Bellarmine entered the game second in the nation in free throw shooing making 81.5 percent on the year. Against the Hounds, though, BU made just 16 of 28 charity tosses while Indianapolis drained 12 of 14.
The Knights also lost the turnover battle, coughing it up 14 times to just 11 UIndy miscues. Again, reversing the statistical trend as Bellarmine came in with the eighth-best turnover margin in the country.
"It's frustrating as teacher when you see things in a game," Davenport said, "that you've taught and taught and taught, and in the game, the exact opposite happens. As a teacher that's very deflating."
The Greyhounds had four players reach double-digits, led by Lakes with 17. The junior forward also hauled in 10 rebounds to collect a double-double.
Joining Cook in double figures for the Knights were
Ben Weyer and Bradshaw with 16 and 11 respectively. Weyer just missed his own double-double by pulling in nine boards.
The loss drops Bellarmine to 14-1 (7-1 GLVC) as the Knights' reign as the Division II's only undefeated team comes to an end. The Greyhounds improve to 12-4, 4-4 GLVC.
Bellarmine now has a short turnaround with Southwest Baptist and Drury coming in for games on Thursday and Saturday.
