Women's basketball hunkers down in fourth, pulls away from UIS for 77-67 win

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Senior forward Mallory Schwartz registered another double-double against Illinois Springfield, and the Bellarmine University women's basketball team registered another win over the Prairie Stars.

This time the victory came on the road, as the Knights completed the regular-season sweep of UIS with a 77-67 triumph Thursday night at the TRAC in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Both of Schwartz' double-doubles this season for Bellarmine (11-7, 6-5 GLVC) have come against Illinois Springfield (7-12, 2-9). The latest one included 12 points and 11 rebounds, and she also had three assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Alisha Owens scored a team-high 14 points while senior guard Mikayla Berry and senior center Ally Mayhaus chipped in 10 apiece.

Bellarmine won the first meeting with UIS, 58-42, on Jan. 2 in Knights Hall. The most recent encounter was close throughout, as Bellarmine took slim leads of 12-9 after the first quarter, 35-30 at halftime and 46-42 after three periods.

With 7:02 left in the fourth, Illinois Springfield cut its deficit to 50-47. Owens responded by converting a feed from Schwartz while getting fouled, and she completed the old-fashioned three-point play. Berry followed by sinking a pair of free throws for a 55-47 lead with 5:48 remaining.

That mini-run proved pivotal. UIS never got closer than five the rest of the way. Bellarmine kept the Prairie Stars at bay with stellar shooting from the free-throw line and a couple key baskets by sophomore guard Presley Brown and Berry. The Knights' advantage reached 10 on a free throw by freshman guard Ashlee Harris with a shade over three minutes left, and the glut of attempts from the charity stripe continued thereafter.

Bellarmine canned 28 of its 33 opportunities (84.8 percent) from the line. A massive 25 attempts came in the fourth quarter — in addition to the 20 taken by UIS in the period — and the Knights made 23 of them.

Berry made all eight of her free-throw chances for Bellarmine, junior guard Breia Torrens was 9 for 10 and sophomore guard Kathleen Scott was 4 of 4.

Bellarmine plays at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Lewis.
